Maitland Mountain Farm

My first independent freelance project!

Last summer, while helping out the Maitland's on their urban farm and small pickling company, I realized that they did not have an online presence outside of Facebook and proposed that I build their website! Over the course of the next several months, we worked together to craft a site that showcases their products, their passion, and their family.

As my first paid freelance project this was a huge learning experience for me. I was able to work through the entire lifecycle of the project and develop creative solutions to problems that arose during the build. This project taught me a lot about working indpendently as a freelance developer and how to work effectvely with clients.

Patatap Clone

Fun with color, sound,animations, and javascript libraries!

This project was built while taking "The Web Developer Bootcamp" offered by Udemy and taught by Colt Steele. It is written in HTML/CSS and utilizes the popular javascript libraries Howl.js and Paper.js. A user can visit the site and each letter key corresponds to a sound and color that will be played on key press.

This is probably one of my favorite toys built thus far! It incorporates my love of music and front-end development. Currently it is pretty simple in terms of animation but I look forward to getting more creatice and continuing to build it up. This challenge gave me a chance to play with two libraries that I had never used and gave me a chance to explore issues associated with Cross-Origin Resource Sharing.

The Great RGB Color Game

A color matching game that allows users to bursh up on their understanding of rgb values.

This project was built while taking "The Web Developer Bootcamp" offered by Udemy and taught by Colt Steele. It is written in HTML/CSS and vanilla Javascript. The game is intialized with a grid of colored tiles (in either an easy or hard state), one of which is selected as the target or "winning" color. The rgb value of said color is displayed at the top of the page and the user's goal is to match the corresponding colored tile to the rgb value.

I had a great time building this little app, I learned a lot about the separation of concerns in the front-end, how to organize and refactor javascript code, and perhaps the most obvious - a solid understanding of how rgb values work!

ToDo List

A compulsive list maker's dream.

As someone who creates lists for everything, this practical todo list app is something I plan to continue to add functionality to over time! This project was offered in the "The Web Developer Bootcamp" offered by Udemy and taught by Colt Steele. The app is written in HTML, CSS, JS, and jQuery.

Building this applicaton provided a solid re-introduction to jQuery providing me with the chance to explore event delegation and bubbling as well as some additional insight into CSS animations. I really loved getting into the simple effects and animations in this project, it's awesome being able to bring something static to life!

CodeConnect

A job board built by bootcamp grads, for bootcamp grads.

Team Members: Davis Bare, Brian Bernheim, Kimberly Embry, and Jack Howerton.

CodeConnect was the brain child of Dev Bootcamp students who were nearing the fourth phase of the program known across campus as "fun-employment". Bootcamps are emerging as a popular and effective way to become a developer and we wanted to create a space that could connect potential employers seeking diverse and unqiue talent with graduates who represent those qualities. As the capstone project at Dev Bootcamp, the team was given seven days to bring this concept to life.

This project, built with Ruby on Rails, was fun, challenging, and inspiring. It was great to work on a team of such talented individuals and put our newly developed skills to the test - technically and otherwise. We spent a lot of time checking in, hosting stand-ups, and supporting each other through bumps in the road. We chose to push ourselves more in terms of functionality than design/style and were able to reach the majority of our stretch features within the seven day timeframe.

Palate

A recipe sharing application.

Team Members: Kimberly Embry, Jack Howertown, Hussein Al-Sammarie, Zaw Lwin

Palate was one of the first large scale projects of the final phase of Dev Bootcamp. The "client project" was an elaborate role play conducted by a mock investor in which the team was briefed on a concept and were given three days to bring it to life. Our task was to build an application in which users could add recipes, search for recipes, rate recipes, and have their recipes featured on the homepage in a daily tasting menu.

I was truly amazed how much we were able to accomplish in just three days, we were very deliberate in our planning and took our time during what I consider one of the most crucial periods of the development lifecycle. I had an amazing time working with the members of my cohort to create this fun project!
